Astrology and Self-Discovery: Connecting Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz

As I was writing another post, an idea came in about two occult stories that mostly everyone has probably heard about…can you guess which ones?

These are two fascinating tales about the transformational journey undergone by the main character. The idea that I had was to connect these stories to a possible change in the plot. I felt compelled to dissect and interpret the stories while providing an example of having either of these characters seek astrological counsel. What if…

alice in wonderland

“Alice in Wonderland” is a story about a girl named Alice who goes through an intense inner transformation via a curious white rabbit. She follows the rabbit into her own subconscious. While in her subconscious realm, she meets with peculiar parts of herself energized by the different characters in her “dream” state.

These characters within Alice’s dream (aka subconscious realm) were exaggerated in their qualities. There’s the Mad Hatter, who is her creatively eccentric aspect considered crazy due to its innovativeness. The Queen of Hearts is the part of her that she had been denying, who just wants love and validation; not receiving this love and validation, the bully is born. On and on, she reunites with each of her unaccepted and shunned parts. In the movie version, the epitome and conclusion of her transformational healing is seen when she conquers the dragon that she feared, who’s actually the dweller in the threshold within her.

the wizard of oz

Similarly, in the other tale, “The Wizard of Oz,” we get to know Dorothy who goes through her own evolution towards enlightenment. Here we have an unhappy girl, who decides to run away from home. She meets with a “good samaritan,” who manipulates her into going back home. Unfortunately for her, a tornado hits her town. Suffering a knock on her head, she goes into a different dimension within herself. We can also call this her dream state.

Like Alice, Dorothy also meets different parts of herself while going through her own healing journey. In that subconscious dimension, she meets with the parts of herself that “lacked” confidence (courage), empathy (a heart), and intellect (a brain). She basically had very little knowledge of her greatness. Besides self-knowledge, what she truly lacked was clarity. At the end of this journey, after meeting with the wizard behind the curtain, she finally figures out that she already possessed all of the qualities that she didn’t believe she had. Furthermore, Glenda the Good Witch of the North, tells her that she was always able to get back home by believing that she could. As you may conclude, Glenda is her own inner wisdom whom she finally listened to instead of listening to all of her erroneous beliefs.

Once on the healing journey, we must all come face to face and conquer our own demons or dragons…the dweller at our threshold. After defeating this inner fear by embracing it, we’re able to move on to the next chapter with a greater sense of inner fulfillment and wholeness.

What does this have to do with astrology?

Think about Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz (you can also do this exercise replacing Dorothy with Alice), and imagine her coming to an astrologer for guidance. She’s feeling lost and confused – perhaps even despondent. She’s at her whit’s end; so she decides to seek some help.

That astrologer has the capacity to provide guidance, comfort, a fresh perspective, and a remedy (a way out of her miserable state). By looking at all the clues in her birth chart, discussing what was currently going on with her, and going even further, by dissecting each area of her life to get a clearer picture of what’s going on within her, the truth is revealed.

Aha!! The astute astrologer is able to figure out that her inner demon is her own ignorance of her inner wisdom. The astrologer is able to counsel Dorothy about her “wizard behind the veil” that’s making it hard for her to find her way home. The way home to herself is just limited by the wrong negative beliefs she held onto.

The wizard behind the veil is simply all of the wrong ideas that Dorothy has about herself and her life.

Her thoughts were so muddled that she couldn’t get a hold of some clarity. She didn’t realize that she had all the things needed within herself to make it back home. She had the heart and brain once united could allow her to critically think and discern between good and bad. She also had the physical strength. She just didn’t know she had all of that due to the persistent negative thoughts that went against what her heart wanted to experience. That’s why she felt stuck!

It was clearly seen by a thorough investigation of her internal harmonics or divisional charts, called Vargas. Thankfully, this astrologer knew what to look for in order to gain clear insight.

The newly empowered Dorothy now has some hope of improving her circumstances thanks to the the astrologer’s insights and counsel. Since she was helped to see what she could not access due to the inner demon making her believe wrong ideas, she was able to see a brighter future once more.

Dorothy was rejoiced to find out that she really wasn’t stuck at all and that there was a simple way to get back home. The shift in perspective made Dorothy realize that the problem that she thought was so unsurmountable was easily solvable.

How did this guide find this?

Experienced astrologers know that each portion of a chart could be divided up even further to see the inner workings at play. That makes sense and goes along Galileo Galilei’s idea, who said “mathematics is the alphabet with which God has written the universe.”

Mathematics is the alphabet with which God has written the universe.”

~ Galileo Galilei

That means we have to always consider things mathematically.

Astrology has a lot of math involved because the first step in accuracy is all about how we’re computing and calculating charts. Once we have the charts, we can interpret what we see. That’s why astrology is the perfect balance between intuition and logic, uniting both hemispheres of our brain: the creative right with the logical left.

We can only give good counsel to the extent that we’re willing to do the deeper work needed to guide those in need. This means that even astrologers need to do inner work and look towards addressing their own blind spots.

Much like Dorothy’s astute astrologer did, we can use our faculties to investigate further by holistically inspecting the 16 Varga (divisional) charts. Deeper insights only come after a holistic examination takes place of these 16 charts. Things that may otherwise be missed will come to light once the harmonics are studied and incorporated into the assessment.

what would you do?

If you’re an astrologer, how would you guide and counsel someone in need? Would you use all of your available tools? Have you found that using the Vargas are helpful to provide insights that would otherwise be missed?

If you’re someone seeking counsel, would you want to go to an astrologer that uses the deeper mystical methods of arriving at insights and clarity?
