Depression: A Call for Connection

We are going to explore the dark as a way to connect to light.

Have you experienced depression? If you have then you know what it feels like. It’s the type of sadness, hopelessness, and helplessness that keeps you in the dark for weeks without an end in sight. I have experienced this type of thing more than once. I would like to discuss a deeper meaning to this condition. Let’s take a close look at the metaphysical side of this monster that is actually a familiar friend.

First, let’s identify depression the way science has us understand it. Depression is a low feeling state, where one experiences persistent deep sadness or grief, hopelessness, and helplessness for a period of at least two weeks. The symptoms are present every day, all day or most of the day. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, some symptoms may include: persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood; feelings of hopelessness or pessimism; irritability; feelings of guilt, worthlessness or helplessness (I’m adding shame); loss of interest/pleasure in hobbies and activities; decreased energy or fatigue; slow moving or speech; feeling restless; difficulty concentrating, remembering or making decisions; difficulty sleeping, sleep disturbances; appetite and/or weight changes; thoughts of death or suicide (suicide ideation), or suicide attempts; aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems without a clear physical cause and/or that do not ease even with treatment.

Depression literally hurts! It hurts emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and even physically. Honestly, as someone who has experienced her share of depression, I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. On a human level, it is a tough cross to bear. To put it mildly, it is a deep dive into a never-ending abyss of darkness. However, there is always a silver lining to every situation and circumstance. Depression serves our purpose to reach a new level of awakening.

On a metaphysical and ethereal level, depression happens as a way to call into our awareness that something is not in alignment with our highest path. Something has gone awry within our journey here on this physical level (and perhaps on other dimensions too). Our bodies are literally and figuratively out of tune. On a vibrational level, we are in a state of entropy. The silver lining here is that, in this state, we have entered a realm of pure potentiality. However, we have entered it unwillingly; thus it does not feel good.

Due to societal programming (among other layers), we have lost connection with our own guidance system. We lost our connection to the divinity that resides within us. We lost our connection to our Soul, Source/GOD. The connection that we lost is the connection within ourselves to use the guidance that comes from an inner space of harmony. Instead we have lost track of our divine truth due to the random and not-so-random thoughts that we have conditioned within our psyches.

Have you heard the term “Dark Night of the Soul” in spiritual communities? What that term is referring to is simply a deep state of depression. We can even say that this is a Kali moment. The archetype of Kali Ma is one that takes no excuses. She is not one to be messed with because she can be ferocious if needed. She chops off the heads of the demons because of her deep love for humanity. The demons in this case are the thoughts of the ego. As you can see, her fury is actually here to help us in our awakening. This archetype, as with all archetypes, is woven within our very own DNA/psyche. To know more about these archetypes, I invite you to explore the channel Murtis And Vedanta on YouTube.

Now since we have briefly explored the metaphysical root cause of depression, what can we do about it? This will sound counterintuitive. When we are depressed we want to shut the world out and not be bothered by anyone or anything. Although we don’t want to engage or connect, that is precisely what is required to get out of that state. I realize that it may be simpler said than done, however, we must put in a bit of our effort. By incorporating our will power, even if it is a small portion, it will go a long way.

We can use the sacred elements to help us shift our vibration and perspectives.

Instead of staying in bed all day, one could choose to get up and jump in the shower. The water element is helpful to move our energy from a stagnant level into a flowing one. Being grateful to have the opportunity to shower/bathe helps shift our perspective. Many people in different locations lack clean running water. It is a luxury that we usually take for granted.

Writing in a journal works well also. In fact, a great technique to use is one that allows us to engage with the element of air. By speaking out what we would rather experience, we engage with the Spirit of Air to take our intention into a higher dimension. Using pure therapeutic-grade oils works wonders also since it connects us with the element of air. My recommended oils will be at the end of this article. You are free to choose the ones that you believe will work for you.

We could also use the element of fire. Taking a piece of burning paper and writing down the thoughts/feelings that plague us allows the thoughts to be expressed. We can then ask the Spirit of Fire to transmute the energy for us by burning our written concerns. The smoke that is created by the burning of the paper works to shift the energy. Please be cautious when using fire. Only do this if you know what you’re doing. We sometimes forget to have respect for the element of fire and the damage that it can cause if not vigilant.

Finally we can use the element of earth by planting a seed of a beautiful plant. Invoking our intentions into the seed before planting it. Also before planting, we can invoke the Air Spirit to work with Earth Spirit. In so doing, we are merging two elements achieving more momentum for our work. Making these techniques into nice rituals helps the psyche connect to the realm of infinite possibilities.

Using the elements can empower us and help us achieve our goals. We are never truly alone. Although it may seem as though we are forsaken, that is not the case. We truly have tremendous help from unseen sources if we choose to connect. We also have help from seen sources. All that is needed is a shift in perception.

On a more tangible side, call up a friend to talk. People seem to have forgotten how important a phone conversation can be for both parties. There is nothing more special than listening to the tones in each other’s voices. Feel free to connect in this way. Speaking of tones, put on some high-vibe music. Music that will make you want to get up and move your body is the best option to play. Alternatively, you can elect to play meditation tunes or solfeggio frequencies. Last but not least, my favorite type of healing. Play with a child and play like a child. The sheer joy that comes from playing and not over-thinking works magical wonders!

As you can see, there are many options to choose from when you are feeling low. The low vibration of depression just needs a shift in our focus. What seems to happen a lot is that we get sucked into that abyss and forget to engage with these techniques.

The simplest modality that I can offer (other than playing like a child) is connecting the breath to the heart. Focusing on our breath as we feel our own heartbeat can shift us enough to think with more clarity. Our brain needs oxygen. When we are stressed, depressed, angry, and other lower-vibrational modes, our breathing decreases. Once our breathing decrease, the brain’s capacity to think with any clarity drastically decreases. To shift quickly into a more coherent state, all we need to do is touch our hearts and breathe.

Have a connected week!
